Car Pool

Post by Jes@GCRE » Thu Mar 24, 2016 10:44 am

Hi,

I said I would try and write this down so here goes!

Various discussions on Sunday about how we could move forwards and something that has been requested is an easy-to-access on line "car-pool".

This is simply a section of the website where teams which have cars to hire can do so in a ready made format (a little like ebay I guess).

Photo
Stats
Which drivers it is suitable for.
Transport provided or pickup required.
Cost and what is included*

Then a 1-click link so that prospective teams can contact the car owners direct.

For example, I had 1 car and a set of parts which could have made a 2nd sitting in Rugby last weekend.
Dave had a spare.
Doughty apparently have 4 of the things!

It could be an easy think to link to from facebook etc for enquiries.

Jes

*Someone also suggested that 1st time out, car hire could be free but a donation could be encoraged. Which would basically mean the BFPCR hired it from the owner. Not sure how the maths works.

There are several options for this, a simple page on the website listing whats available with contact links, a plugin on the website like a B&B room booking plugin, a separate "sub-forum" on the forum like the sales/wants area or maybe even a category in the shop.

I think a dedicated plugin is probably overkill but could offer options like automatic availability and booking or a car listing plugin like https://www.wpcarmanager.com/.

A simple page is easy to set up but a pain to keep updated as only website editors would have that option, unless through careful setup we allow team managers edit access. Also contact details unless obfuscated would be in plain view. May be able to do with categories/tags and each car having its own page which displays on a master page similar to the way the teams page http://pedalcarracing.info/teams/ displays details from the separate team pages.

Sub-forum, easy to set up, anyone can have read access with team managers being able to post to it/make updates. Less work for website team. Not as nice layout as no thumbnails of the cars until you open up the topic. Contact details hidden as will use PHPBB PM or email options.

i'll have a think in next few days and knock up a demo or two

Richard James is selling his ex-Apollo car (advertised on the facebook group) for £400.
Do committee members think the club should purchase this as the first Pool Car?
Jes has said he would be able to collect it April 8th or 10th (he's away at the moment)

Any further thoughts on this please? I suspect we may have to be fairly quick as it's likely to sell at that price.

This will be a great start and as the price is low it won't be on Facebook long.

A steal bearing in mind the cost of getting a basic car on the grid

Please see Facebook - Jes has grabbed the car on behalf of BFPCR... Please can we confirm that this is ok with everyone so that he can be reimbursed?

However...

Sam Knight is also interested so if he is going to put together an actual team to run it then I will cede it to him.

If it's just him then I argue that more people will benefit if the federation has it and hires it out.

Sounds good to me. Maybe ask Sam for first refusal on a sale if later on he decides to sell for whatever reason
