British Pedal Car Championship trials new Driver Rating System for 2017

We are pleased to announce that, from 2017 onwards, the BPCC have hooked up with the Strava cycling app in a new “driver rating system” aimed at leveling the playing field.

It has been noted by the committee that the same teams generally come out on top in the sport, no matter what is done to change dates, formats or circuits.

Firstly, those teams who have either nurtured and encouraged new talent into the sport since drivers were in their early teens often find themselves on the podium.
Secondly, those teams who simply go out and recruit the best riders from the HPV and cycling communities to drive the car tend to always be there or thereabouts too.

And finally there are those teams from established cycling clubs (and the BHPC) who are made up of people generally very able and experienced at riding bikes or recumbents very fast to start with.

In an attempt to rectify this, each driver registered with the BFPCR will be graded Platinum (fastest), Gold, Silver or Bronze depending on their training times as recorded on the “Strava” app.

The new rules will see each team obliged to use a mixture of drivers from these different ratings so that no one team can have the best four drivers in the sport.

Normal races: 4 drivers – each driver line up must be made up of at least one “Silver”or “Bronze” rated driver and no more than one “Platinum”.

24 hour races: 6 drivers – each driver line up must be made up of at least three “Silver”or “Bronze” rated drivers and no more than one “Platinum”.

Teams will be invited to submit their 2017 drivers for grading on January 31st 2017.

They will then be encouraged to sign up to Strava where their performance will be monitored for a 6 week period.

Driver ratings will be announced on March 15th to give teams plenty of time to arrange their line ups in time for the Bruntingthorpe 6 hour which will be on Saturday, April 22nd 2017.

We feel this is a big step towards leveling the playing field and encouraging new teams to take part as pedal car racing moves forward.
